Myths About Memory Foam Mattresses

November 5, 2010 · Posted in quality mattress · Comment

Although visco-elastic foam, also frequently referred to as “memory foam” was developed by scientists in the 1960′s as an improvement on other methods of cushioning astronauts during launch, memory foam is often called “new” and “space age”.  In fact, some mattress stores have been selling memory foam mattresses for nearly a decade.  Over time, the quality of visco-elastic beds has improved, though some quality myths still remain true.

One myth surrounding this type of mattress is that quality can vary widely from mattress store to mattress store.  This myth holds true, as different manufacturers use different methods and technologies to make their brands of visco-elastic beds.  The myth about these beds having chemical odor is also related to the difference in manufacturing techniques.  Some foam mattresses may give off an odor, though it usually dissipates within a couple of days.  This varies depending on the methods use to make and transport the beds.  Manufacturers also frequently use different kinds of bases for memory foam beds, which adds to the differences in quality.  It is a wise idea to head down to the local Los Angeles mattress store and give a memory foam mattress a good try before purchasing.  Researching the particular brand in consideration is another good way to help ensure that it is a quality product.

Memory foam mattresses are also rumored to “sleep hot”.  What is meant by this remark is that the mattress traps heat and can be very uncomfortable for sleepers as a bed that traps heat makes it difficult for the body to regulate temperature.  This myth is false about visco-elastic memory foam.  The rumor is rooted in old information about mattresses made of other types of foam, such as “egg crate” foam.  Egg crate foam quickly lost popularity when memory foam mattresses and toppers became widely available on the consumer market.

On the topic of heat, this kind of bed is also rumored to be incompatible with bed warmers and electric blankets.  There is a measure of truth here.  Because the foam softens in reaction to heat- usually body heat- the use of electric heating devices will wear the bed out more quickly.  Some manufacturers also recommend not using bed warmers and electric blankets due to the risk of fire.  In the United States, all mattresses must meet federal fire safety standards, but meeting the standards does not outweigh the risks when consumers go against manufacturer warnings.

The best way to compare a particular bed with the myths is to research each brand under consideration.  Most myths and legends are based on some modicum of fact, and those surrounding memory foam mattresses are no different.  When in doubt, stick with a mattress store that is trusted in the area.

Customers Urge Boycott Of Frito-Lay For Scrapping Compostable Bags

October 7, 2010 · Posted in air mattress · Comment
Kris Alingod – AHN News Contributor

Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – Frito-Lay customers are calling for a boycott because of the company’s decision to stop using biodegradable bags for most of its SunChips products due to complaints over the noise the groundbreaking packaging makes.

Texas-based Frito-Lay will resume using traditional plastic bags for five of six of its SunChips flavors. Specially-marked 10.5 ounce bags of the original flavor will continue to have the 100 percent compostable bags.

The company, which is a unit of PepsiCo, said it is working on a new biodegradable packaging that takes into account customer feedback, including the level of noise created by the bags.

Customers, however, filled Frito-Lay’s Facebook and Twitter pages with angry comments about how the company was “pander[ing] to a ridiculous request” and proving its compostable packaging was a mere “marketing ploy.”

Customers who wanted the bags to be kept argued there were obvious alternatives such as transferring the chips to a bowl or reusable plastic container. Many made clear they would stop buying SunChips and called for others to do the same.

“I will no longer buy SunChips, or any Frito Lay product for that matter. You caved too easily!!!!!,” Melody L. Martin commented.

“We saw the Sun Chips commercial… before we saw that commercial we had never eaten or bought a single Sun Chip,” said Kristofer Hoch on Wednesday. “As of this day, our compost pile contains probably 100 or more empty bags of Sun Chips; all in various stages of break-down. As of this day, I’ll never buy another bag of chips from Frito-Lay, UNLESS you bring back the compostable bags.”

Frito-Lay sought to “set [customers'] minds at ease” by saying it was still committed to biodegradable packaging.

The compostable bags are made of plant-based sugar carbon instead of petroleum-based carbon. They were launched last year, earning praise for Frito-Lay for introducing a first in the global snacks industry. The company, however, suffered an 11 percent drop in sales of SunChips over the past fiscal year.

Many customers had complained about the the noise of the new packaging, and one even created a Facebook page, “Sorry But I Can’t Hear You Over This SunChips Bag,” that had more than 47,000 fans.

The noise created by the packaging was disruptive and may offset any environmental gains, customer said.

“We have small children who nap during the day and go to sleep earlier than we do at night, and the bag has actually woken them up before,” Michael said in a discussion on Frito-Lays Facebook page. “So after purchasing we immediately transfer the chips to a large plastic Ziploc bag thus negating the gain made by the more biodegradable bag.”

Customers also reported other issues with the bag, such as tearing too easily and failing to keep chips fresh as long as the old packaging.

Big Ben Back: Ban Over For Steelers Quarterback, Roethlisberger Rejoins Team

October 5, 2010 · Posted in best matress · Comment
Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Pittsburgh, PA, United States (AHN) – Ben Roethlisberger, who has not suited for the Pittsburgh Steelers since the preseason, is officially back Monday after the Steelers starting quarterback was reinstated by the NFL following a four-game suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

Roethlisberger, 28, who for the first time since 2007 was not elected captain by his teammates, received a warm reception from his teammates in his return.

The Pro Bowl quarterback and two-time Super Bowl champion attributed to his absence as the cause of his failure to get the nod of his teammates for the co-captaincy.

“It’s good to be back here at the facility, especially with my teammates,” Roethlisberger said at a news conference Monday. “It’s good to see coaches and be around my teammates. I’m just excited to be back and get focused on football, focused on this year and try to get to Dallas,” he added.

Roethlisberger is not only expected to work his way back slowly, but will have plenty of making up to do with the Steelers, his teammates and even the city of Pittsburgh.

The Steelers were 3-1 without their starting quarterback, who led them to two Super Bowl victories over the previous five seasons.

Despite establishing themselves as one of the top teams in the AFC during Roethlisberger’s absence, the Steelers struggled with their passing game, placing 31st among 32 NFL teams.

Pittsburgh went through a quarterback carousel in Roethlisberger’s absence, with third-year signal-caller Dennis Dixon starting the season.

But Dixon did not last long under center as he suffered an injury vs. the Titans on Sept. 19.

The ailment sidelined Dixon for the rest of the season, paving the way for veteran Charlie Batch to direct the offense. Batch, in turn, will have to step back in the return of Roethlisberger.

Roethlisberger reportedly attended the Steelers’ meeting in advance of Tuesday’s practice. He is most likely to play in Pittsburgh’s Week 6 contest against Cleveland.

FC Dallas Clinches Playoff Spot, Cunningham Ties Goals Record

October 3, 2010 · Posted in mattress prices · Comment
John Tranchina – AHN Sports Correspondent

Frisco, TX, United States (AHN) – It was a special night for FC Dallas.

Jeff Cunningham scored on a penalty kick in the 67th minute to tie the MLS all-time goal-scoring record, helping FC Dallas secure a 3-0 victory over the Chicago Fire Saturday night.

Dallas clinched a playoff spot for the first time since 2007 with the triumph, while also extending its unbeaten streak to 18 games (10-0-8) to equal the league record, set by Columbus in 2004, for a single season.

“What a great night for FC Dallas,” said coach Schellas Hyndman, who was hired in June 2008 and missed the post-season by one point last year when Dallas lost the final game of the year.

“We worked so hard in the last two years to be in this position, to clinch a playoff spot and I’ve lost a lot of sleep. It was very stressful when things didn’t go well at the beginning. The words I always used, we wanted to develop a culture of winning and I think we have that here now.”

“The feeling in the locker room after the game was a little bit of relief and a lot of excitement,” said Dallas midfielder Dax McCarty, one of just two FCD players left from the 2007 squad. “Clearly, the unbeaten streak is nice, but our goal from day one of training camp was to make the playoffs.”

For Chicago, which falls to 1-6-2 in its last nine, the defeat all but eliminates them from postseason contention.

Their mathematical chances still hang by a thread of multiple-team tie-breaking contingencies, but the Fire, with four contests remaining, have little hope of making the playoffs.

“It was a difficult match,” Fire coach Carlos de los Cabos said. “We played against one of the best teams in the league this season. We started well in the match and had chances to score. I think that the second half was more difficult for us because Dallas played better.”

Chicago, who was shut out for the fifth time in its last six contests, is now 3-12-1 all-time in Dallas.

With Dallas ahead 2-0, Cunningham sealed the win with his penalty kick goal.

After Fire defender Dasan Robinson pulled him down in the penalty area, Cunningham stepped up to the dot with a slight hesitation and slotted a low shot just inside the left goalpost.

Cunningham, the MLS Golden Boot Award winner year for leading the league with 17 goals, notched his11th of this season and 132nd of his career, tying DC United veteran Jaime Moreno.

Cunningham, who entered the match in the 57th minute, found the back of the net for the seventh time in the last nine games.

“It’s unbelievable,” McCarty said of Cunningham’s career numbers. “Jeff is a top professional, he takes care of himself really well. He’s just a great goal-scorer, there’s no other way to put it.”

Milton Rodriguez scored his fourth goal of the season in the 19th minute gave Dallas the early lead, and Marvin Chavez connected for his second goal of the year and in as many games about 30 seconds into the second half.

Dallas goalkeeper Dario Sala, the only other FCD player left from 2007, made two saves in recording his first shutout of the season and 23rd of his six-year MLS career.

Sala, playing his third straight game in place of injured starter Kevin Hartman, even earned his second career assist when a free kick he boomed from just outside his own penalty led to Rodriguez’s goal.

Ellen DeGeneres Speaks Out Against Gay Bullying In Tearful Video

October 3, 2010 · Posted in air mattress · Comment
Anthony Jones – AHN Entertainment Reporter

Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) – With four suicides related to gay bullying making national news this month, Ellen DeGeneres recorded a tearful video message urging that something must be done about the current crisis of bullying amongst teenagers which has lead to four deaths just this month.

In the video, DeGeneres express her devastation with the deaths of 18-year-old Tyler Clementi, a Rutgers University student who killed himself after being outed online after his roommates recorded him in a sexual act with another male, as well as 13-year-old Seth Walsh in Tehachapi, California, 13-year-old Asher Brown of Cypress, Texas and 15-year-old Billy Lucas in Greensberg, Indiana.

“This needs to be a wake-up call to everyone: teenage bullying and teasing is an epidemic in this country, and the death rate is climbing,” DeGeneres said. “One life lost in this senseless way is tragic. Four lives lost is a crisis.

“My heart is breaking for their families, their friends and for a society that continues to let this happen,” DeGeneres continued. “These kids needed us. We have an obligation to change this. There are messages everywhere that validate this kind of bullying and taunting and we have to make it stop. We can’t let intolerance and ignorance take another kid’s life.”

DeGeneres also lists ways to help stop bullying and also ways to seek out help for those who are being bullied. Among them are the Trevor Project, a 24-hour national help line for gay and questioning teens, the National Center for Bullying Prevention, Matthew’s Place run by the Matthew Shepherd Foundation, and Angels and Doves.

“Things will get easier, people’s minds will change, and you should be alive to see it,” DeGeneres said.

New Risk Factor for Adult Heart Disease Identified in Children

October 2, 2010 · Posted in mattress prices · Comment
Ayinde O. Chase – AHN News Editor

Cincinati, OH, United States (AHN) – Researchers have uncovered a risk factor for heart disease in adulthood that can be identified in children as young as 10.

The researchers from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center found a link between stiffness of arteries and function of the heart’s left ventricle later in life.

“Screening for arterial stiffness and diastolic function – the ability of the left ventricle to relax and fill with blood before contracting and pumping it to the body – may be called for in obese teens or those with type II diabetes if we want to identify young people at increased risk for developing early cardiac disease,” said Dr. Tom Kimball, a pediatric cardiologist at Cincinnati Children’s and senior author of the study.

Kimball and his colleagues reviewed echocardiograms, arterial stiffness measurements and other data of more than 600 people between 10 to 24 years old.

The team ascertained that subjects with arterial stiffness who were older, heavier, had a poorer lipid profile and higher blood sugar also had poorer left ventricular diastolic function, a known risk factor for heart disease.

Jets Sign Ex-Ravens Defensive Tackle Pryce

October 1, 2010 · Posted in best matress · Comment
Corine Gatti – AHN Sports Contributor

East Rutherford, NJ, United States (AHN) – After Trevor Pryce was released by the Baltimore Ravens Wednesday morning, the veteran defensive tackle decided to exercise with his wife to gain some perspective following the news.

He didn’t need to mull things over for long, as he later received a call from his agent to report to the New York Jets to play for Rex Ryan.

Pryce was let go Wednesday by Baltimore to make room for safety Ken Hamlin.

Pryce has 90 career sacks, ranking him fourth among active players. Since Pryce was on the roster during Week 1, they still need to fork over $2 million.

Pryce, 35, played for Ryan for three seasons in Baltimore. The four-time Pro Bowler simply said, “When Rex calls, you answer the call.”

Baltimore was going to bring Pryce back Monday after he had a 30-minute chat with coach John Harbaugh. But Pryce said that he never agreed to return to the team, because there was no guarantee he would play again.

It was that, or sit out for the remaining season. The gamble was simply not worth it.

Then he got the call to rejoin Ryan. The matter was settled.

“When this opportunity pops up,” Pryce said, “You go, ‘Ah, I don’t think I’m going back.’ “

Pryce started to feel at home when he looked at the playbook and his teammates.

“It was like I stepped in a time capsule. I saw DT [Dennis Thurman], I saw Rex and I saw [Mike] Pettine. I saw Bart [Scott].”

Now all J-E-T-S…you know the rest.

Feds Urge Parents Not To Put Babies In Sleep Positioners

September 30, 2010 · Posted in mattress prices · Comment
David Goodhue – AHN News Reporter

Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – Two federal agencies are warning parents and caregivers not to put their babies in sleep-positioning products because they can suffocate children.

Two recent deaths have been linked to the products, the Food and Drug Administration said in a statement. The FDA and the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued the warning after reviewing 12 known deaths associated with using the products.

The most common types of sleep positioners have bolsters attached to each side of the mat and wedges to elevate the baby’s head. They are meant for children under 6 months old.

Over the past 13 years, the federal government received 12 reports of babies known to have suffocated to death after being placed in positioners. Most of these children died after rolling side to side to their stomach.

The agencies are urging parents not to use these products . They also reiterate that babies should be placed to sleep on their backs. Pillows, quilts, blankets or anything else should never be placed in a baby’s crib.
