Feds Urge Parents Not To Put Babies In Sleep Positioners

Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – Two federal agencies are warning parents and caregivers not to put their babies in sleep-positioning products because they can suffocate children.

Two recent deaths have been linked to the products, the Food and Drug Administration said in a statement. The FDA and the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued the warning after reviewing 12 known deaths associated with using the products.

The most common types of sleep positioners have bolsters attached to each side of the mat and wedges to elevate the baby’s head. They are meant for children under 6 months old.

Over the past 13 years, the federal government received 12 reports of babies known to have suffocated to death after being placed in positioners. Most of these children died after rolling side to side to their stomach.

The agencies are urging parents not to use these products . They also reiterate that babies should be placed to sleep on their backs. Pillows, quilts, blankets or anything else should never be placed in a baby’s crib.

Sealy shares down 14% after third-quarter losses

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Sealy Corp. shares fell 14% to $2.40 on Wednesday after the bedding company reported third-quarter losses late Tuesday. Sealy said it swung to a quarterly net loss of $15.8 million, or 16 cents a share, from a profit of $12.1 million, or 5 cents a share, in the same quarter last year. Sealy is the largest mattress manufacturer in the world with sales of $1.3 billion in fiscal 2009.

Strike Looms At CN Rail

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (AHN) – A strike looms over CN Rail after the deadline for mediation talks ended on Tuesday midnight with both parties at a standstill. Another option is a lockout.

With this development, both CN Rail management and Teamster Canada Rail Conference could file a 72-hour notice to lockout employees or to begin an industrial action. Teamster represents 2,700 conductors, traffic coordinators and yardmen. Ninety percent of union members voted to stop working if an agreement with CN Rail could not be reached.

A union spokesman said they have no intentions yet to file a strike notice and want to continue negotiations with management. CN Rail said it will put in place a contingency plan in case negotiations fail.

The deadlock is over CN plans to cut 30 percent of brakemen and streamline yard and road crew, which could lead to 200 employees more losing their jobs. Teamsters’ last collective bargaining agreement with CN ended in July.

The union spokesman said that while they want to go back to the bargaining table with an open attitude, they will not compromise on issues concerning health and safety. Teamster wants to be included in their new agreement a change in scheduling from having employees on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to more consistent hours.

Here are some things that you know about memory foam before rushing out to purchase a new mattress topper for your bed.

Density

The density of your memory foam mattress topper is extremely important. Density is measured in pounds per cubic foot. The higher the density of your mattress the better it will conform to your body and the longer the mattress topper will last. Memory foam runs from a density of 1 to 5. Anything over 4.5 is considered to be a high density and the best choice for a mattress topper as it will conform to your body better and will last you far longer than a mattress topper with a density of 2 or 3. The density should be clearly marked on the topper if it is not then ask. Don’t buy a topper with a low density rating or one that is not marked because chances are that these are inferior toppers.

Thickness

Many people confuse density with thickness when it comes to memory foam mattress toppers. They are not at all the same thing. You can have a 2 inch mattress topper with a density of 4 or 5 and a 4 inch thick mattress topper with a density of only 2. If those are your only choices you will be better off with the two inch thick mattress as the density of the less thick mattress topper will conform better to your body than that of the four inch mattress topper. Ideally however, a three or four inch topper with a density of 4.5 will be the best choice.

Amount of Memory Foam

Many times that mattress topper you buy is not all memory foam. It is loaded with fillers. While memory foam mattresses actually need layers of other materials to keep them from being too soft, your topper is going to be laying on top of a mattress already made of other materials, so you want your topper to be as close to 100% memory foam as you can find. Placing a topper that is only 20% memory foam on top of a hard mattress is simply not going to give you the comfort you are seeking.

If you make sure that your memory foam mattress topper is high density, reasonably thick and actually contains more memory foam than filler you will get the full benefits that these toppers have to offer.

Kids Who Have Frequent Family Dinners Less Likely To Abuse Drugs And Alcohol

New York City, NY, United States (AHN) – Having dinner with your kids at least three times a week may be the prescription to keep them away from drugs and alcohol, according to a new study.

Researchers at Columbia University’s National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse say teens whose families have infrequent dinners together are twice as likely to have used tobacco, almost twice as likely to have used alcohol and one and a half likelier to have smoked marijuana.

Kathleen Ferrigno, the CASA’s marketing director, said in a statement that dinner time is an important time to ask children about what’s happening in their lives.

“Ask questions and really listen to their answers,” Ferrigno said.

The study also suggests that kids who have fewer family dinners are more likely to have friends who smoke, drink and get high.

The full report, “The Importance of Family Dinners IV,” was released to coincide with “Family Day – A Day to Eat Dinner With Your Children” which is celebrated on the fourth Monday in September.

Jimmie Johnson Bounces Back With Dover Win

Dover, DE, United States (AHN) – Four-time defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson didn’t take long to put the naysayers to rest.

Johnson, who struggled last week in the first race of The Chase at New Hampshire, led 191 of 400 laps in winning Sunday’s AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway.

“It feels great. Last week didn’t turn out the way we wanted, but that’s racing,” said Johnson. “We’re in the middle of this thing and I’m really, really excited. We did a great job today and we were in the right position.”

Fellow Chase driver Jeff Burton didn’t lead any laps, but he brought home a runner-up finish and Joey Logano was third, while Chasers Kurt Busch and Carl Edwards finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Chaser Kyle Busch led 46 laps and finished sixth, while non-Chasers Paul Menard and Ryan Newman ran seventh and eighth respectively.

Points leader Denny Hamlin finished ninth, but was happy about a top-10 finish at a place that has hamstrung him in past years.

“It was a decent day. It was a good fight. This is what we needed to do to get by this weekend,” said Hamlin. “This is a huge obstacle for us. This has kind of bitten us in The Chase the past few years.”

AJ Allmendinger, who led a career-best 143 laps, ran 10th, while Chaser and four-time Cup champion Jeff Gordon ran 11th, a finish that dropped him four positions in the points standings.

As for the remaining Chase drivers, Kevin Harvick finished 15th, Matt Kenseth ran 18th, Greg Biffle was 19th, Tony Stewart ran 21st and Clint Bowyer was 25th.

Two races into The Chase and with eight races remaining, Hamlin leads the points standings by 35 points over Johnson, while Kyle Busch is third and brother Kurt Busch is fourth. Harvick is fifth and followed by Edwards.

Burton, Gordon, Biffle, Stewart, Kenseth and Bowyer make up the final six points positions in The Chase as the series heads to Kansas next Sunday.
