Which Futon Mattress Should I Choose?

March 30, 2010 · Posted in mattress · Comment

Choosing the correct mattress for your futon can mean the difference in really loving your futon or being disappointed in your futon. There are a variety of choices when choosing a futon mattress. The mattresses can have cotton, cotton and foam, cotton and wool, cotton and polyester, inner-springs and a combination of these items Organic mattresses are available and are the perfect futon for a chemical free mattress.

Cotton mattresses have a soft yet supportive cushion. Cotton is breathable, absorbent, durable and temperature resistive. All cotton mattresses tend be heavier than mattresses with foam and cotton. There are all cotton mattresses which are chemical free. These all cotton organic mattresses that do not contain any fire retardants require a prescription from a physician. There are some all cotton mattresses with borate as the fire retardant that do not require a prescription from a physician.

Cotton and foam futon mattresses are becoming more and more popular. There are a number of foam/cotton mattresses available. The cotton and foam are layered in these mattresses. These mattresses are lighter than all cotton mattresses. Adding the foam layers to the mattress, makes the mattress softer and more plush than all cotton mattresses.. Foam comes in both flat slabs and convoluted layers. Flat slab foam gives a smooth feel while the convoluted foam gives more loft. The foam layers are the center layers with the cotton layers on the outside layer. The cotton layers add the breathable quality and allows the futon to conform to the body without the spongy, bouncy feel.

Cotton and wool futon mattresses have the wool as the outer layer which provides a natural fire retardant to the futon. The wool in the mattress creates an extreme cushion making these futons feel soft. Sag and compaction is significantly reduced. Wool is a natural fire retardant, is breathable, does not off gas and is a dust mite repellent. These futon mattresses are the real deal in chemical free organic mattresses. The wool is the fire retardant in these mattresses.

Innerspring coils in the center of coil mattresses provide firm support for all body types. The have steel circular coils inside that push back the pressure applied to them to provide good cushioning that will last for a long time. Futon innerspring mattresses can be surrounded by foam, cotton or a combination of both. These layers protect the body from feeling the coils in the mattress. The mattresses with innerspring coils are really durable.

Price is often an indicator in quality. You should choose the futon mattress that is right for you at the price you can afford. The cotton/foam mattresses provide the maximum benefit for the best value. If you want a soft mattress, consider the mattresses wrapped in wool or the mattresses with foam as one of the ingredients. Coil mattresses are typically firmer mattresses. The chemical free organic mattresses are great for people with allergies and you will have a green product that is good for you and the environment.

All futon mattresses will need proper care. They will need to be rotated and flipped just like regular mattresses do. Cotton mattresses can be aired out on a non-rainy way – and will make the mattress fresh again. You will want to purchase a mattress cover when you purchase your mattress. The mattress cover will not only be beautiful but will also protect your mattress.

Mattress Graveyards – Should We Really Be Burying Our Mattresses?

March 27, 2010 · Posted in mattress · Comment

We all buy mattresses for our homes and often get five, ten, fifteen maybe twenty years worth of use out of these mattresses. We go out and purchase a new mattress and of course must find a way to dispose of our old mattress. Many dispose of their mattresses via trash or disposal service. But this leads to filling our landfills with old mattresses creating a sort of mattress graveyard where more trash and debris cover them up to lay beneath tons and tons of trash in a landfill. Many of the materials inside these mattresses is not biodegradable.

This is the month of October which brings us Halloween, ghosts, ghouls and scares. Perhaps, when we bury our old mattresses we should be concerned that they are going to rise from the ground and walk the earth like mattress zombies scouring the Earth for restless sleepers like us . Perhaps your old mattress is looking for you like the zombie out of a Halloween thriller. Maybe there is a better way though of disposing our old mattresses that’s more green friendly rather than burying them. That way they won’t be possessed with the idea of coming to find us.

Many civic leaders and environmentalist have come to the same conclusion that disposing of large bulky items that can’t decompose into a landfill just isn’t the solution. So what are some of the options we have for discarding our old mattresses? If your mattress is perhaps five years old or less and is still in new or close to new condition then it should be recommended to ask family or friends if they can use your mattress. Explain how much you paid for it and tell them you’d rather see someone you know be able to use it rather than discarding it. You’d be surprised how many people may have a mattress on its last leg and may jump at an opportunity to replace it with a more modern mattress.

Perhaps your family and friends are happy with their mattresses (which is good) and just can’t find a use for yours. If this is the case why not considering donating your mattress to one of the many charitable organizations or non-profit organizations out there. Companies like Goodwill or Salvation Army are often happy to accept lightly used mattresses that they can use in their own programs or offer them for sale through their stores to raise money for the different programs they offer for your community. It’s not scary at all to drop off your old mattress to the different drop off locations. Who knows, perhaps your mattress will find a new home and live again.

There are also manufacturers who take old mattresses and use the old steel spring components and anything else that can be recycled to make new reconditioned mattresses. With the price of steel and foams climbing many of these businesses are able to recycle old mattresses and re-introduce new components into them to make a new mattress. These mattresses feature yellow law labels sewn into them and are companies like these accept and often will pick up old mattresses for these components. Typically only found in larger metropolitan areas these manufacturers or local shops help to find new life for your old mattress which will keep it out of a landfill. Recycled and reconditioned mattresses won’t have bugs or other crawling creatures come out of them like some scary Halloween thriller. They are specially sanitized and cleaned before being returned to the general public for sale again but have new life breathed into them.

Many city waste processing centers are starting to recycle old mattresses by taking the steel out of them and scrapping it and melting it down as well. Not all do this but many are again due to the high cost of steel. You can contact your local city waste pickup center and ask them if they recycle. Metal scrap yards might also be a great place for recycling your mattress rather than introducing it into a landfill.

In this article I brought out the fact that landfills have long been mattress graveyards by mattresses being placed into landfills and buried by tons of trash and waste. There are alternatives to this and include donating your mattress to companies like Goodwill or the Salvation Army. Having them picked up by local manufacturers who recycle them into new reconditioned mattresses. There is always the choice too of having them picked up by your local waste or recycling center which can use the steel and other materials out of the mattress which will reduce what goes into landfills.

Hopefully if you’re considering disposing of a mattress you can find a better home for it than having it get buried into a graveyard of old mattresses, trash and other waste. If you decide to try to recycle your old mattress than you’re definitely doing you’re part to help be more green and eco-friendly towards our environment. If you decide to just send your old mattress off to a landfill however, beware. Old mattresses in the mattress graveyard have been known to come out at night, looking for restless sleepers with whom to find. As you’re telling ghost stories around that Halloween campfire, watch out behind you. That old mattress may be lurking like an undead zombie in the shadows. Stay alert and make sure you all stay together. Much like our planet’s ecology if we all do our part we’ll hopefully make it through to the sequel.

What to Know Before Going Into a Bed Mattress Store

March 21, 2010 · Posted in mattress · Comment

Mattress shopping can be time-consuming. Looking for a mattress to suit your needs may take patience, too. One should know pretty well the kind of mattress he or she needs in accordance, of course, to the individual’s budget limit.

For a smoother mattress shopping, here are some things to consider before stepping in to a bed mattress store:

- Take some time to think. Before indulging yourself in a “mattress shopping mode” at your favorite bed mattress store, try to introspect and then decide – is it really time to change your old mattress with a new one? Just like other furniture and appliances at home, mattresses also undergo aging which will lead to its incapability in meeting your needs.

When do you buy a new mattress?

- if you are not sleeping as comfortably as you were previous years ago – your old mattress is already worn out and sagging – your mattress is giving you more body aches and tired muscles after a long sleep, instead of providing you comfort – your mattress does not fit you anymore. There are times when people grow, both in age and body built, that they do no longer be able to fit comfortably with their mattress. – change of lifestyle. A sudden change in your status, such as getting married, requires someone to shift to another type of mattress.

It is best to set expectations of the mattress that you want before buying one. Expectations would involve the quality of the mattress as well as the kind of customer service one will receive upon going to a bed mattress store.

Furthermore, one should also choose a mattress that suits well to the available space of the bedroom where it will be placed. A single size bed mattress, for example, is ideal for rooms that have limited space.

Quality

Make sure your mattress can withstand all the pressure and tension it has to endure from its users. Also, the mattress should be able to conform with the dimensional size of the bed frame as well as the temperature condition of the room where the mattress will be placed.

A good mattress should be comfortable to sleep on. A memory foam mattress, for example, is known for its light characteristics as it conforms flexibly to the body position of the one sleeping on it. This characteristic gives a “cradle-like” feeling as it relieves pressure from the body of the sleeper, particularly on the areas of the shoulders, hips and back. A good quality of mattress should also be hypo-allergenic to prevent dust mites from inhabiting your mattress, giving it a fresh and healthy environment.

Good Customer Service

You can tell from store personnels if you’re in a store with good service or not. A bed mattress store should have sales persons who have wide knowledge on the mattresses (or other bed products) their stores are selling. A good bed mattress store should have some people around the store who can guide pretty well their consumers through the often confusing wide array of available mattresses to choose from. If you find their sales persons not well-educated on the products their stores are selling and are giving you more confusion than guidance, then venture out to another bed mattress store where you will be more comfortable to ask around.

A good customer service is one that deals with their clients honestly. More often than not, mattress dealers mislead their buyers through series of mattress sales just to attract their buyers in purchasing their products.

Buy from a reputable bed mattress store. This kind of store has established already a good name through its durable and high quality mattresses as well as excellent customer service. The reputation of a bed mattress store can be checked upon through testimonials of previous clients and on mattress reviews that can be found mostly in the internet.

Inquire about the delivery service. This includes fast delivery and friendly delivery crew.

- Test the new mattress that you want. This is often the case if someone do the canvassing in the internet and was not really able to personally touch (or feel) the mattress.

It is advisable to check on the mattress and lie down on it so that one can have a personal feel of the mattress, and test its comfort

A Kingsdown Mattress – Good Value For Your Money?

March 18, 2010 · Posted in mattress · Comment

Kingsdown makes three ranges of mattress; the Kingsdown Perfect Partner, the Kingsdown Plush Sense mattress and the Kingsdown Body System mattress. Each offers different characteristics to give the consumer a comfortable mattress. But in order to review Kingsdown mattresses and then decide if they offer good value for money one must understand the niche market that Kingsdown fills.

Companies like Sealy and Serta are well-known in many countries and many consumers feel confident when buying their products. However, Kingsdown is a small, independent mattress manufacturer that specializes in making mid- to high-end mattresses. The company has also been in business a long time; over 100 years.

Over the last 30 years there have been many new designs of mattresses using many different technologies. We have seen the rise in popularity – and then fall – of water beds; we can now buy air mattresses like the Simmons Luxaire mattress; pocket coil spring mattresses like the Beautyrest Pocket Coil system, also from Simmons; the latest innovation of memory foam mattresses from Tempur Pedic; and the marrying together of conventional mattresses with memory foam from Sealy and others.

Kingsdown does not manufacturer any of these types of mattresses. Instead it sticks to what it knows best; innerspring mattresses. This is no bad thing as over 90% of mattresses sold use the conventional, inner-spring coils. The plain truth is that most consumers feel more comfortable sleeping on an inner-spring coil mattress. What Kingsdown does is try to make the best, most comfortable mattress in the mid- to high-end price range.

Kingsdown mattresses use good quality materials but so do all of its rivals. What Kingsdown claims makes its mattresses better than the rest is the use of computer technology in the design process of its mattresses.

The latest offering from the company is the Kingsdown Body System mattress. The coil springs and the materials used are no better than other comparable manufacturers but the company claims that it will be the most comfortable you can buy when used in conjunction with its Dormo-Diagnostics Sleep Machine. Basically, the Kingsdown Dormo-Diagnostics Sleep Machine is a computer system that analyses your body shape, and weight distribution and uses this data against measurements from the result of studies involving millions of people, thousands of mathematical formulas and 18 key statistical measurements. The system is available from all licensed distributors of Kingsdown mattresses and only takes a few minutes to do. A data read out will advise you on the Kingsdown Body System mattress that best suits your requirements.

Whether or not a machine can do a better job of choosing your mattress than your own judgment is debatable but maybe it can? After all, when choosing a mattress you’re supposed to lie down on it for at least 15 minutes, try out your various sleep positions, and, ideally, lay down on it in your pajamas – or whatever else you sleep in. Doing this is not easy as most consumers feel very self conscious when lying down on a mattress in a busy department store.

Many people sleep with a partner and Kingsdown have designed a mattress especially for couples: the Kingsdown Partner Perfect. The company claims this mattress is the best and most technically advance mattress for couples. I doubt this is true. The biggest problem with traditional inner-spring mattresses is wave-motion. This is movement felt by one partner when the other moves. This movement is inherent in all inner-spring mattresses because all the coils are interconnected. The wave movement is more pronounced when one partner is significantly heavier than the other. If you have this problem you might be better off looking at other types of mattresses like memory foam from Tempur Pedic or a pocket coil system from a manufacturer like Simmons.

Finally, the company makes the Kingsdown Plush Sense mattress. The main selling point of this mattress is the ProEdge Spring System in the mattress and box spring. The claim is that the ProEdge gives greater comfort with a perimeter that is 20% firmer so giving better edge to edge support. Does a firmer edge give better support? Probably not but some consumers do like mattresses with firm edges. If you like a firm edged mattress then the Kingsdown Plush Sense mattress is a good choice.

Kingsdown do manufacture top rated mattresses and many reviews of Kingsdown mattresses are highly favorable. Before buying a quality mattress you should decide what type best suits your needs. If you prefer traditional, inner-spring mattresses then a Kingsdown is probably as good as Sealy, Serta and Simmons mattress of the same type.

A Review Of Kingsdown Mattresses

March 15, 2010 · Posted in mattress · Comment

Most consumers are aware of the big mattress manufacturers like Sealy and Serta but there are other, smaller, independent mattress manufacturers that make mid- to high-end mattresses. Kingsdown mattresses aspire to fill this niche. What follows is a short review on what types of mattresses on offer from Kingsdown.

Kingsdown have been making mattresses for over a hundred years. Kingsdown make only the more traditional inner-spring mattress. Whilst others like Simmons manufacturer pocketed coil mattresses and Tempur-Pedic lead the way in producing memory foam mattresses, Kingsdown prefers to stick to what it knows best. But this is no bad thing; the fact is most people prefer sleeping on a traditional inner-spring mattress and this type of mattress remains the most popular type. What Kingsdown tries to do is make the best inner-spring mattress at a price most consumers can afford.

The Kingsdown Body System mattress is the company’s latest offering. The mattress is made from a full coil system using coils made from high-tempered steel. This is nothing new; many high-end mattresses are made with this type of coil. What Kingsdown has done is to employ the latest computer technology to design a mattress that is as comfortable as any on the market. Kingsdown claim the unique construction of the Body Shape mattress shapes and conforms to an individual’s body shape, allowing hips, head, and ankles to maintain the optimal straight line position. The Body System mattress comes in numerous configurations. Whether or not the Kingsdown Body System gives you better support than other top quality mattresses is debatable, but many consumer reports give the mattress a favorable thumbs-up.

What really helps to ensure that you get the best Kingsdown Body System mattress is the Dormo-Diagnostics Sleep Machine from Kingsdown. Simply put the Dormo-Diagnostics Sleep Machine is a computer system that has been compiled from sleep research carried out on millions of people. The system works by getting the customer to answer a few questions, then to lie down on a special diagnostic bed. The computer system makes its calculations and in a few minutes the customer has an easy to read printout that recommends the best Kingsdown mattress for their needs.

The Dormo-Diagnostics Sleep Machine tries to take the guess work out of buying a mattress. Of course, some will prefer to trust their own instincts about choosing a mattress but I, for one, think letting a machine analyze your sleep requirements is a step forward; after all, do you really feel comfortable trying out a mattress in a busy store, fully clothed, laying down with your partner and trying out all your usual sleep positions!

Speaking of laying down on a mattress with your partner, Kingsdown also offer a range of mattress called the Kingsdown Partner Perfect. The company claims that the Partner Perfect is the most technically advanced mattress in the world but basically it is just another inner-spring mattress. Inner spring mattresses inherently cause wave motion when one partner moves thereby disturbing the sleep of the other.

Manufacturers have tried other types of mattress design to eliminate motion disturbance. I’ve tried most of them; water bed and pocketed coil to name but two. But personally, if you really want a mattress that totally eliminates motion disturbance you’re probably best with a memory foam mattress. My wife and I currently sleep on a Tempur-Pedic memory foam mattress and we both love it: I no longer cause my wife to lose sleep during the night as I toss and turn.

Finally, there is the Kingsdown Plush Sense mattress. The Kingsdown Crown Imperial Plush mattress uses the ProEdge Spring System in the mattress and box spring, thereby giving greater comfort and a perimeter that is 20% firmer than other mattresses giving a better edge to edge support. The mattress is hypo-allergenic using two layers of Flexatron, combined with a layer of high-density SupersoftFoam, with an ultra-thick layer of convoluted Qualatex to help give a low pressure sleep surface for longer, undisturbed sleep.

If you prefer traditional inner spring mattresses – and most consumers do – then it is worth while taking a look at a Kingsdown mattress. Kingsdown mattresses may not lead the field in mattress technology but the company does make mattresses of excellent quality.

Cleaning A Mattress

March 12, 2010 · Posted in mattress · Comment

You know that phrase “out of sight, out of mind”? Well, it applies to your mattress. Because your mattress is usually covered by sheets, comforters, pillows, quilts, dogs, clothes, people, etc. it isn’t necessarily the first item on your list of things to clean. This article will provide you with some easy tips on both how to keep your mattress clean and how to clean your mattress when it gets dirty.

Keeping your mattress clean

The first thing to be said about cleaning a mattress is do what you can to keep your mattress clean. The more disciplined you are with what happens in or around your bed, the less cleaning you will end up doing. That means that you will want to avoid eating and drinking while in your bed. you will also want to avoid letting pets sleep on your bed. While it may not seem like much, keeping animals, food, and drinks away from your mattress will greatly reduce the chances of spills and accidents. The more spills and accidents you can avoid the less you will have to worry about cleaning your mattress. In cases where mattresses are at a higher risk for spills or accidents (in a child’s room for example) then you may want to consider a mattress bag or mattress liner/cover. Such mattress covers are typically placed below the sheets and help to prevent liquids from seeping into the mattress. Most covers can be purchased for $10 – $40 and are usually durable enough to last a couple years. You may also want to consider a washable mattress pad. Costing $100 – $300, washable pads are considerably more expensive than plastic liners or covers, but are more durable and comfortable, and help protect against both solid and liquid spills.
Cleaning Up

Given how much time we spend in or on our beds it’s inevitable that accidents happen. However, if you are prepared for such accidents, then when they do occur you will be able to take care of them quickly and reduce the chance that your mattress will be permanently stained or damaged.

If the spill or accident involves liquid (i.e. urine, vomit, drinks, etc.) then the first thing you will need to do is blot the spill. Using a clean, dry towel or rag, apply as much weight as you can on the spill (you can even try standing on the towel/rag). Do not rub the spill! Rubbing liquid spills does not allow the towel or rag to absorb as much of the liquid and can cause the stain to seep deeper into the material. Continue blotting until the spill is slightly damp to the touch. Once you’ve removed the bulk of the liquid then you are ready to apply a cleaner. The cleaner you apply will depend on the liquid that was involved in the spill or accident. For organic spills (urine, vomit, juices) you will want an enzymatic cleaner or a 50/50 solution of lemon juice or vinegar and cold water. Enzymatic cleaners work by breaking down the peptide bonds in the proteins of the liquid. They can be found at your local grocery store and usually cost $5 – $20. Most non-organic spills can be taken care of by common spray upholstery cleaners. Once you’ve decided on which cleaner will work best for your situation, spray, not pour, the cleaner on the mattress. Pouring a cleaner onto your mattress can yield the same results as the initial accident, as the cleaner can seep into the mattress’s material. After lightly spraying the spot, blot the cleaner with a new, clean, dry towel. Once the area has been thoroughly blotted again, sprinkle some baking soda over the area. The baking soda will both help to absorb the remaining moisture and will help eliminate odors as the area dries up. While you will want to leave the baking soda on for longer the larger the stain is, we recommend at least 8 – 10 hours. Once the baking soda has had time to do its job, vacuum it off of your mattress and continue using it as normal.

In cases where your mattress is submerged in water (i.e. a flood) or is exposed to a moist environment for long periods of time, the steps to get the mattress are going to be quite different. First and foremost, when mattresses get wet they can (and often do) develop mold. This mold is usually not visible and can pose serious health risks. Because you likely spend 8 or more hours in or on your bed a day you are putting yourself at risk to be inhaling mold spores. These spores can make you sick and in some cases can actually kill you. That said, if you have the means to replace a mattress that has been exposed to large amounts of liquid do it! Spending a few hundred dollars to replace a mattress may save you thousands in mold related medical expenses down the road. If your mattress starts to smell a little musty then chances are that it has developed some mold/mildew. When this happens you will need to kill the mildew. Using a light bleach solution spray and blot the mattress, then let the mattress dry in the sun. While the bleach and sun will help to kill the mold you may want to consider running a humidifier in the room to help prevent new mildew from growing.

For spills that involve solids (chips, cookie crumbs, etc) you will need to first pick up the large pieces. Once you’ve gotten those out of the way vacuum up the smaller pieces. If there was any staining from the spill then spray the area with an appropriate cleaner (we talked about finding the right cleaner above) and blot the sprayed area with a clean, dry towel or rag. If there is any lingering odor once the area has been sprayed and blotted then sprinkle it with baking soda, let the baking soda sit for 8 – 10 hours (or longer for bigger spills) and vaccum the area clean.

There are also a number of good mattress cleaning solutions that are available for purchase in retail locations and online. You may want to take a look at Butler’s Secret and ProKlean (although we’ve heard horror stories about their customer service). You can also always contact the mattress’s manufacturer to get additional cleaning and maintenance tips!
Clean Mattress Maintenance

Most mattresses are designed to be used for 5, 10, 20 years or more. With that much use there are a few things you can do to keep your mattress smelling fresh. One of the simplest things you can do to keep your mattress fresh is to change the sheets regularly. By changing your sheets regularly you will prevent dust mites, dander, and dead skin cells from making their way through the fabric of the sheet and into your mattress. A second simple maintenance procedure is to vacuum the surface each time you flip your mattress. When vacuuming make sure you use the hose with either no attachment or the hard surface attachment (that does not have a brush).

If your mattress starts to smell a little stale there are a couple things you can do. First, you can lightly clean the mattress’s surface with a lemon scented upholstery cleaner or with a 50/50 lemon juice and cold water solution. The surface should be lightly sprayed and then blotted dry. A second step you can take is to place a few dryer sheets underneath the sheets and other bedding. Dryer sheets are not a perfect or long term solution, but they can provide some temporary relief. If you or someone you share the room with start to experience headaches, you will want to try a new scent. If there is a residual smell from cigarette or cigar smoke, sprinkle baking soda over the entire surface of the mattress, let it sit overnight and then vacuum clean.

We hope that this guide has been useful! Best of luck getting your mattress cleaning and keeping it that way!

What To Look For When Choosing A Futon Bed Mattress

March 9, 2010 · Posted in mattress · Comment

Everyday, we spend such a significant portion of our lives sleeping. If we’re not getting the sleep we require and aren’t comfortable at night, we will feel exhausted throughout the day and perhaps suffer from aches and pains as well. Remember, healthy and comfortable sleep is fundamental for our body and health mental state.

Why Should You Get A Good Mattress?

A bed mattress is probably the most important part of the bed, however it is also the part that is most overlooked. Some studies point out that four out of five people grumble about some form of back pain and often this back pain is connected to an improper mattress. Buying a new mattress set is not something very hard, but buying the best in the market is sometimes very hard. When you are shopping for a new bed, you will probably put a lot of time into the selection of the bed frame itself.

A bad mattress can give you some spinal problems, backaches and a number of other aches and pains. Take advantage of great night’s sleep and wake up fresh and in a good mood each day. Not only is sleeping an important part of our health in renewing our body, but sleeping on the right mattress size is also an important component to receiving that good night’s rest.

When it comes to mattress, the most important point to consider is your health. A comfortable mattress can help you fall and stay asleep for the entire night, thus waking up the next morning refreshed and ready to face anything the day ahead has to offer. The description of a good mattress is one that is comfortable and yet firm enough so that the body is properly supported during the sleeping process.

Introducing Futon Bed Mattress

A futon mattress is a unique style of mattress. A futon bed can be used during the day as a sofa and makes a great bed for sleeping on. It is a popular choice for many consumers as a result of their flexibility of function.

The down side is Futon mattresses need a lot of care than conventional ones. It can be hard to find a futon mattress then other variations of mattresses simply because these variations of beds are not as often found. Nevertheless, buying a futon bed is a great choice.

The futon mattress of a futon bed is usually not as thick as a regular bed mattress, and can be filled with foam, cotton, innersprings, polyester and/or viscoelastic foam.

There are some factors that have to be considered when buying futon mattresses. Futon bed mattresses made from 100% cotton are at the heavier end of the scale, as is its firmness and flexibility. The weight of the mattress will determine the effort to reconfigure the futon sofa into a bed. A futon mattress made from a mixture of cotton and foam is much lighter and less firm than that of one made from 100% cotton.

Futon mattresses can be purchased on the web or through your local retailer. Sometimes, when shopping for a futon mattress, you may find that you can purchase a mattress and bed frame for a lower cost as a bundle then you would if you were to purchase them separately.

Tips On Choosing Your Futon Mattress

Before buying a top rated futon bed mattress make sure that the qualities of the mattress are what you require. Remember not all mattresses are made the same nor do they have the same level of comfort for each potential sleeper. From the comfort level that the mattress can provide to the foundation to the warranty, everything needs to be considered before you buy one.

Of course, the more you pay, the higher quality mattress you can expect to get. When choosing your mattress, the cheapest price is not necessarily the best value. It is important to pay the appropriate amount of money for the quality of mattress that you wish to obtain your good night’s rest on.

Take into consideration the dimension of the mattress. A great way to know if the mattress dimensions are right for you is to get a mattress on trial, and if it is not suitable you can refund and/or exchange. Lastly, a futon mattress should be something that you invest in with the knowledge of the quality that it can offer to you.

How To Choose The Right Mattress For You And Family

March 6, 2010 · Posted in mattress · Comment

There are many factors to consider when purchasing a mattress. Some of these factors include its firmness, the warranty, reputation of the manufacturer and the size of the mattress. A good mattress will allow you to maintain the same natural spinal alignment that you have when standing.

Why Mattress Is Important

A bed mattress is probably the most important part of the bed, however it often gets overlooked. Your body needs proper rest to be at its best. Maybe it’s time we turned to some of the better mattresses that we have available to us today.

A comfortable mattress can help you fall and stay asleep for the entire night, thus waking up the next morning refreshed and ready to face anything the day ahead has to offer. There is nothing like a good night’s sleep. If you have difficulties falling or staying asleep it could be because of the fact that your mattress is not comfortable enough and/or is not providing the right support in order to relax your body and mind into sleeping. The experts at sleep study institutions everywhere fully know the ramifications of getting a full night’s sleep and know the importance of having a good one.

There are a vast number of mattresses available, which usually makes it extremely hard to choose the right one. Some example of mattresses are latex foam mattress, adjustable bed mattress, futon bed mattress and spring mattress.

Latex foam mattresses

Latex foam mattresses are great for your body, spreading evenly underneath you causing absolutely no pressure points while you sleep deeply. If you suffer from back problems, sleep disorders, you toss and turn or you just want a fantastic night’s sleep every night, a memory foam mattress or a latex foam mattress may be just what you need.

Adjustable Bed Mattress

For people who have Degenerative spondylolisthesis, Osteoarthritis and Spinal stenosis, an adjustable bed mattress may be what they need. For them sleeping in a reclining position can make it easier to sleep comfortably all through the night. If you are considering an adjustable bed, the first thing you should do is to find out if you are comfortable enough in an upright or inclined position to sleep in that position for an entire night. Adjustable beds are different than standard flat beds because they allow users to change the incline angle of the head of the bed and, in many cases, at the foot of the bed as well.

Adjustable beds, after all, specifically offer the sort of comfort that some of us might particularly be in need of, especially those who are suffering from certain health conditions and who require special sleeping comforts that include an elevation for the head and feet. If you find yourself tossing and turning all night long on a standard flat mattress, and you find the slightly inclined position to be comfortable, an adjustable bed may be a good choice.

Futon Bed Mattress

Futon beds are a popular choice for many consumers due to their flexibility of function. It is a unique style of mattress. A futon bed can be used during the day as a sofa and makes a great bed for sleeping on.

Futon mattresses need a lot of care than conventional ones. There are some factors that have to be considered when buying futon mattresses. For example, the heaviness of the mattress will determine the amount of effort required to transform the futon sofa into a bed.

Spring Mattress

A spring mattress forces your body to adapt to its shape, those springs are extremely stubborn! When buying a new spring mattress it is important to remember that you should buy a complete set. This means that not only should you buy a new mattress but purchase the accompanying box springs as well.

It is important to shop for and investigate the quality of the mattresses available on the market. It is important to remember that, as the consumer, you get what you pay for. Be sure that you like the feel of the mattress in the store.

Also, take into consideration the warranty on the bed. This is very important when buying a new mattress set. Most good brands come with 10 years of warranty. Before buying a top rated bed mattress make sure that the qualities of the mattress are what you require.

Consumer Reports: Crib Mattresses

March 3, 2010 · Posted in mattress · Comment

There are two general types of crib mattresses: foam and innerspring. Both tend to keep their shape well. There are differences, of course. For one, foam is lighter. The densest foam mattress is usually no more than 10 pounds, compared with 20 to 25 pounds for some innerspring mattresses. So changing your baby’s sheets may be easier with a foam unit. Foam is also less springy and therefore less apt to encourage your baby to use the mattress as a trampoline. Still, innerspring crib mattresses remain the most popular.

If you’re considering a foam mattress, keep in mind that low-priced models tend to be mushy and flimsy, with a thin vinyl covering and vinyl edging. They may also be unsafe. Putting a baby to sleep on a soft mattress increases the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Higher-priced models tend to be firmer (and therefore safer), with thicker, reinforced vinyl or cotton coverings.

To assess foam density (which has a direct relation to firmness), compare the weight of different foam models. That’s not always easy to do in a store, but if you’re able to lift several different mattresses, do it. In general, the heavier the foam mattress, the denser the foam. You can also give the mattress a squeeze test in the center by pressing your palms into both sides of it at once. A dense mattress won’t allow you to press very far. A denser foam mattress is also likely to have firmer edges, which is another important performance factor.

To judge the quality of an innerspring mattress, don’t go by the sales gimmick of “coil count.” While the cheapest innerspring baby mattresses have about 80 coils and the most expensive can have 600 coils, a high coil count doesn’t always mean a firmer mattress. In fact, a model with 150 coils can be firmer than one with 600. You can judge by picking up mattresses to compare their weight and by squeezing them to test for firmness. Innerspring models generally have firmer edges than foam mattresses, but squeeze the edges to do a comparison. You may also feel border rods at the top and bottom perimeter, which provide extra edge support for safety and durability.

The number of layers of padding, what that padding is made of, and the quality of the covering add to the price and increase comfort. The cheapest innersprings, like low-end foam mattresses, have thin vinyl coverings and edgings, which can tear, crack, and dry out over time. As prices go up, coverings become thick, puncture-resistant reinforced double or triple laminates, and edgings have fabric binding, which is a sign of quality. Beyond that, reversibility, the presence of ventilators, and thickness are factors that differentiate one model from another.

The mattress you select should also be in compliance with a new flammability law that went into effect on Jan. 1, 2004. Though this is a state law applying only to California, crib mattresses sold in other states are expected to comply with it.

SHOPPING SECRETS

Compare mattresses in the store. Do this by squeezing them.

Confirm store return policies. And keep your receipt. A store’s return policy is more important than a mattress maker’s warranty. The store should be willing to exchange a mattress that doesn’t fit properly, which is a major safety concern.

WHAT’S AVAILABLE

The major brands of foam and innerspring mattresses are, in alphabetical order: Child Craft, Colgate, Evenflo, Kolcraft, Sealy, and Simmons. Prices range from $30 to about $230.

RECOMMENDATIONS

You don’t have to spend the most to get a good quality mattress, but don’t skimp, either. A budget somewhere between $90 and $150 will generally serve your baby well. A good, firm mattress may also promote proper posture and is more likely to be durable, which is important if your baby will be using the same mattress as a toddler bed or you’ll be passing it down to future siblings.

In the case of innerspring models, look for a firm mattress with good support from border rods. Border rods provide extra firmness, durability, and edge support. A mattress with reinforced or embossed vinyl is leakproof; it is also less likely to tear on the metal edge of a mattress foundation and should hold up better over time. Also look for air vents along the sides of the mattress, which not only help keep the mattress ventilated but may prevent seams from splitting when your tot inevitably starts jumping.

When selecting a foam mattress, go for one with high-density foam. Do the squeeze test for firmness in the center and at the edge. Pinch the mattress covering or ticking; it should feel thick, not flimsy.

Make sure any mattress you buy passes the two-finger test for fit in the crib. That is, if you can place more than two fingers between the mattress and the crib, the fit isn’t snug enough. Check that fitted sheets fit snugly and securely, overlapping the corners so that you can’t easily pull them up at the corners. Ill-fitting crib mattress sheets are a strangulation and suffocation hazard. And never use an adult sheet as a crib sheet, not even in a pinch.
